A Queen, in the context of the [[demon empire]], is a powerful [[succubus]] with exceptional magic, enough that she is elevated to a role as bodyguard / advisor / agent of the ruling Emperor or Empress. A Queen is hand-picked by the Emperor or Empress, and as such, her political influence and loyalty can be just as, if not more important than, her actual magical ability. This, unexpectedly, leads to a fair amount of palace intrigue and rivalries between the queens and those trying to promote themselves at the expense of an existing queen.

Queens serve for life, but can retire voluntarily, or else dismissed if she finds herself falling out of the good graces of the emperor.

There are always exactly Thirteen Queens, though oftentimes only a few are present with the Emperor or Empress as the others will be away on missions, tending to her own affairs back at home, on a scientific expedition, engaging in diplomacy, or more.
