The war began largely due to:
- A vast influx of thralls lead to ever-greater wealth disparity amongst demonkind, leading to class resentment
- Multiple power struggles starting from misrule of Emperor Felatitius, the seating of Queen Sephora following the siege and capture of Magan in 5655
- Demons losing their military respectability and assumed continent-wide dominance during the multiple losses in battles against elves and dwarves defending their homes against thrall-taking raids, causing them to look toward one another to loot
- The dissolution of the Coalition of the Free, meaning the demons had no single powerful enemy they could use to rally against
